Smallholder participation in agricultural markets in Mozambique has been historically very low. The majority of rural smallholders are subsistenceoriented, devote the majority of their labor and assets to agricultural activities and rely on crop production for over two thirds of their total household income. Household survey results indicate that the poorest 40% of smallholders sell very little of their crop production. Research has systematically found a positive association between crop market participation and welfare and improved market access has been associated with better access to improved technologies, higher household welfare, and better food security. This flash presents research findings related to household access to agricultural markets, food and cash crop market performance, and implications for government policy.
